Wolfgang Amadeus-Mozart (1756- 1791)

K.570 Sonate für Klavier Nr.16 B-Dur K.570
Composed in 1789; published in 1796. In the New Mozart Complete Works, the sonata number was changed from the traditional ‘No. 16’ to ‘No. 17’. In Mozart’s own ‘Catalogue of His Own Works’, dated February 1789, it is listed as a ‘Sonata for the Clavier’; however, in the first edition published by Artaria in 1796, it is described as a ‘Sonata with Violin’.
First movement: B-flat major, 3/4 time, sonata form. The main theme, which begins with a broken chord motif played in unison at the outset, forms the core of the entire movement as it unfolds. Second Movement: E-flat major, 4/4 time. A beautiful and tranquil Adagio slow movement, beginning with a melody that evokes a sense of affinity with the main theme of the first movement. Third Movement: B-flat major, 2/2 time. The theme is light-hearted and full of vitality, in stark contrast to the first movement. It is a lively movement.
02
Franz Peter Schubert (1797–1828)
He is known as the ‘King of Art Songs’. Schubert is one of the leading composers of the Early Romantic period. He composed some 600 art songs, eight symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a vast number of piano pieces for chamber music and solo piano. He died at the young age of 31, and several decades after his death, interest in his works grew significantly, with composers such as Liszt, Schumann, Brahms and Mendelssohn discovering and highly praising his compositions.

Impromptus No.4 f-moll Op.142-4
Allegro scherzando in E flat minor, 3/8 time
A work from Schubert’s late period. Published posthumously in 1838 by Diabelli in Vienna and dedicated to Liszt by the publisher. It can be regarded as either a rondo form or a large-scale ternary form. It is characterised by a Hungarian-style hemiola rhythmic treatment, in which two bars in 3/8 time are perceived as a single bar in 3/4 time. Regarding the four Impromptus, Op. 142, Schumann speculated that they may originally have been conceived as a single sonata.
03
Claude Achille Debussy(1862-1918)
French composer. Winner of the First Prize at the Prix de Rome for The Prodigal Son. After a period of artistic exploration, which included his friendship with Mallarmé and a trip to Bayreuth, the premiere of Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun (1892–1894) in December 1894 was a resounding success. Around the time of the premiere of his opera Pelléas et Mélisande, he went on to produce masterpieces in the fields of orchestral, vocal, piano and chamber music. The majority of his piano works were composed from 1903 onwards and are characterised by highly innovative concepts.

Composed in 1896; published in 1901. The first movement is dedicated to Mademoiselle de Romilly, the second to Madame E. Rouault, and the third to G. Colonio. Masterpieces such as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Nocturnes (for orchestra) and String Quartets had already been composed, and this work also displays a sound and expressiveness reminiscent of those pieces. The work was premiered by Ricardo Vignes at a concert of the National Music Society on 11 January 1902. Whilst adopting the typical form of a suite and retaining the mood of Debussy’s early works, his own unique and innovative musical language can be glimpsed throughout.
Movement I: Prelude – Composed of two distinct characters. ‘With vigour and a good rhythm’ Movement II: Sarabande – A slow dance that was popular in 17th–18th-century Europe. ‘With elegant composure and leisurely grace’ Movement III: Toccata – Music of perpetual motion (that never ceases).

Gabriel Urbain Fauré(1845~1924)

Op.37 Nocturne No. 5 in B-Flat Major, Op. 37
The work is written in an ABA plus coda form; in the middle section, the inner voices sing richly, and a compositional style characteristic of the nineteenth century is evident, suggesting the presence of a third, ‘invisible hand’ in addition to the right and left hands. One can also sense the influence of Liszt’s pianism in this style; in Fauré’s case, the technique is complex, with two or more melodies constantly moving in pairs. The material presented at the beginning reappears in the coda at the end of the piece, bringing the work to a close whilst leaving a deep resonance.

Franck, César(1822-1890)

M.21 Prelude, chorale et fugue h-moll M.21
Composed in 1884; published in 1884; premiered (and dedicated to) Mademoiselle Marie Poitvin in late January 1885 at a concert of the Société Nationale de Musique in Paris. Composed in 1884, when Franck was 62 years old, his monumental piano work ‘Prelude, Chorale and Fugue’ was his first piano composition in some forty years and is the best-known of all his piano works. The main theme of the chorale is embellished with delicate, beautiful arpeggios, whilst the fugue unfolds with a free structure. At the time of its publication, some critics, such as Saint-Saëns, described it as ‘a piece that is awkward and difficult to play’; however, it was hailed by Alfred Cortot as ‘the product of a genius’, and its true value was recognised.
